ABOUT KAILEY

My name is Kailey Stutzky. I graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy through Aquinas College with my Bachelors in Science and Nursing. After graduating I moved down to the Dominican Republic to work full-time. This blog follows my story of living among the mountains along the Haitian-Dominican border.

How I Ended Up in the DR

When I was younger I always wanted to travel to Haiti, I am not sure why but that is what I had stuck in my mind. Back in 2010, when I was a senior in high school I got the opportunity to put together a group from my youth group at St. Pius X in Grandville to serve in the Dominican in a town called Elias Piña. My thoughts were "This is close enough to Haiti...let's go!" We spent a week working with Building Bridges of Hope and Fundacion Mariana San Isidro Labrador. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE. The next year I decided to come back for a 3-week trip. We ended up taking in our first child into our home. A 4-pound 3-month old beautiful baby girl named Reina. This little girl stole my heart and I knew from that moment on that I would be spending more time in this country. I came down for a week for spring break, took a semester off of school, and spent my summers here every year.

What I Do

I am currently the medical coordinator for Building Bridges of Hope, serving on the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. I help organize our mobile medical clinics, pharmacy, and childrens nutrtion program. We are also building our first permanent medical clinic in a community called Rosa La Piedra. This facility will provide emergency and more preventative medical care to communities that do not have any other options.
