New Year Celebration
What a crazy few months it has been! To celebrate the New Year, I was blessed to have spent some time relaxing for a few days. Some other Americans who live in San Juan and myself crammed five people and four dogs into a car and went off to Jarabacoa. It was wonderful spending time with friends, actually finding time to relax, and returning to beautiful Jarabacoa.
Rockstar Team
Later in January, we had a great team from California come down and work for a week. This team had connections to Haiti and brought some Haitians to join us for the week. It was a blessing to work together as Americans, Dominicans, and Haitians! We spent four days in Rosa la Piedra doing medical and dental clinics. The dentist saw over 100 patients, and the medical clinic saw almost 300 patients! They were a rockstar team that made a huge difference for the people in Rosa la Piedra.
Baptism
January ended with the baptism of the youngest Carlile, Jonathan! Jonathan was baptized at our local parish, Parroquia Divina Misericordia, on the 29th of January. Please join me in praying for Jonathan and his journey of faith!
Returning Mission Team
Shortly after the baptism, Debbie, Jessica Carlile’s mom, arrived with her team from Pinckney. The Carlile kids were ecstatic to have Grandma in town, and I was excited to work with her great team again! We were able to once again have a “normal” week with a group. We attended Mass in El Llano on Sunday, did elderly visits and wellness check-ups on Monday, and did clinics the rest of the week. We were even able to bring the group to a diocese fundraising event which helped raise funds to build an elderly center in San Juan!
Clinic Projects
The clinic is coming along! We have been slowly fixing projects and adding new features. The ramp and parking lot are now complete! An unusually rainy winter caused some delays, but we are happy to get things going again. We will soon be working on final touches including adding iron to the windows, painting the interior and exterior, adding handrails, and more.
Transportation Issues
Amid all of these wonderful things, I have been dealing with some more car troubles. In January, my car had a major oil leak which took a few tries to fix. I was also told that there were some structural issues holding my engine in place that was luckily caught before it was disastrous. Most recently, one of my tires has been losing air daily. This car has served me well for the past few years, but it may be time to start considering my options! Prayers would be appreciated as I continue to discern the best way to continue with this problem.
Prayers:
For the continuation and completion of the small details of the clinic.
For my jeep, as I continue to travel up and down the mountain.
